Introduction:

It has been speculated that CH Hudson could be either the daughter or son of a Mrs Hudson whose details appear elsewhere on this site. Work by CH Hudson shows enough similarities to the known works of both Mrs. Hudson and her identified son to allow educated speculation that ‘CH’ is yet another family member.

It is known that one of Mrs Hudson’s sons became a silhouette artist, about whose work a little is known. ‘CH’ him(or her)self is only known through the evidence of their silhouettes. Work attributed to CH Hudson is usually three quarter length. There is a delicate stippled background and coarser, dense hatching to represent details. Deep shadow stresses the shape of arms. This delicate work and the fact that, unlike Mrs. Hudson and her son, buttons are picked out in gold could be used to put the case that ‘CH’ is female. The fact that depictions of men are somewhat clumsy could be of interest if CH is, in fact, female.

Despite the fact that ‘C.H.’ does not exhibit the same flair as Mrs. Hudson and her son, enough similarities remain to suggest a close relationship. Another clue to back this up is that, in the prospectus for her school, Mrs. Hudson offers drawing on silk: all extant profiles by ‘CH’ are backed with silk. Apart from these suppositions, CH Hudson remains a very unknown artist.
