Introduction:

Mr T.E.F Sainsbury discovered a series of silhouettes of men. Each has a number and year printed and stuck to the profile, and is signed “Hine H.J.C” in various ways. The silhouettes are painted on card, with shading to detail the folds of the clothes. The bustline is the same for all the silhouettes, consisting of an almost straight line. Another similarity is a pool of shading on which Hine signed the profile. Nothing is known of this artist beyond these examples.
