Introduction:

Mrs Bateman is known from an entry in Jackson’s ‘Dictionary’, which refers to two painted silhouettes dated c 1810. One of these was full-length and the other bust-length. One of the examples was signed “Bateman”. No further details about her life or career are known, and no examples of her work appear to have survived.
