Jackson tells us (Dictionary) that Cheney, apart from his painted work, also 'cut and bronzed' silhouettes. If any example of cut work by Cheney were to be discovered, it might well be characterized by 'bronzing', which would be likely to have been executed in neat, methodical strokes of the brush. (Cheney's painted work has a preponderance of neat lines against a wash background.)
