Very little is known of Caldecott. We know that he was working in Torquay as a silhouette artist because a silhouette, apparently dating to 1838, bears the inscription on the back 'Taken by Mr. Caldecott of Torquay'. This silhouette is thought to be of a woman named Emma Livius.
