Almost nothing is known of Campbell’s life or work. A Colin Campbell reportedly worked as a portrait miniaturist in Edinburgh in 1820 and may have also been a silhouette artist. Some have identified this artist with the Campbell discussed here, as his work is dated 1822, but this cannot yet be confirmed. Campbell cut from paper, embellished in gold paint and set his pieces upon a darkly toned red base. He covered his pieces with thick gum Arabic, except on the sitter's face, which gave them a shiny appearance. The two known silhouettes by him are signed beneath the bust-line in small letters as 'Campbell' and 'Campbell.1822'. Given their striking similarities with the works of the prolific artist Edward Foster, it may be that Campbell was influenced by him.
