What is known about ‘Chearkly’ has been surmised from a silhouette reported in Jackson’s ‘Dictionary’, a photograph of which was in the possession of McKechnie. This profile is an early paper cut depicting the bust of Cicero, apparently signed ‘Anton Chearkly’. McKechnie has suggested this should be read as ‘Antony Chearnley’, an early Irish landscape artist believed to have been working at this period. Little is known about Chearnley other than that he was a relatively successful Irish sculptor. As for ‘Chearkly’, his true identity remains mysterious.
