Recorded by Woodiwiss, who had seen ten profiles, two of them signed 'B. Walsh, Edinburgh'. Contemporary directories for Edinburgh and Leith contain entries for Walsh over a period of thirteen years at the following addresses:
1821-23 33 Hanover Street
1823-24 5 Broughton Street
1824-28 7 Brighton Street
1828-33 2 Nicolson Square
1833-34 4 St Andrew Square
In all the entries Walsh is described as 'Miniature and Profile Painter'.
Woodiwiss describes the silhouettes mentioned above as 'handsome studies in dark brown, with a few judicious additions in Indian ink and colour'. The bust-lines he describes as 'unusually flat'. He also records in his papers another example, painted on card in black paint, with details drawn in Indian ink.
Walsh signed his work beneath the bust-line.
