Introduction:

Both Neville Jackson's DICTIONARY and Coke's "The Art of Silhouette" describe a full-length work painted on glass of a man standing before a marine background composed of a lighthouse and rocks. They record the inscription as "J. Woodham from Milverton ao dni 1825". However, the transcription is an error.

Also recorded were directions on the work's rear for it "to be placed upon a south back light not exceeding five feet in height". The ONLY artist including hanging instructions on most of his works was house painter, glazier and profilist JOHN WOODHOUSE (ca 1773-1850).

It's also certain Milverton (in Somerset) was a misreading of Milborne which, only a few miles from Newcastle-on-Tyne, was where John Woodhouse was working at the relevant date.
