Cresswell, Richard Henry, Mrs (McKechnie Section 2)

Recorded by Jackson (The History of Silhouettes) under `Bockton' (see below). Known from a copy (1819) in the National Portrait Gallery of a profile, apparently painted on paper, of Sir William Wynne, Dean of the Arches and Judge of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. The original profile was apparently taken by the Proctor of the Court, Bockton, while the Judge was passing judgment, and Jackson in fact erroneously ascribes the copy to Bockton. Mrs Cresswell was the widow of Richard Henry Cresswell, a lawyer.

Silhouette painted on paper, after an original by Bockton

Inscribed with the sitter’s name and title, followed by the following words: ‘There is no Portrait taken of him, he always resisting all application to sit for an Artist. Mr Bockton the Proctor took this resemblance of him as he sat giving Judgement. It was faithfully copied by Mrs Cresswell, widow of Richard-Henry Cresswell L.L.D. an Advocate’.
