Campione, S. (McKechnie Section 3)

Listed in this Section on account of the reference to him on the trade label of Taylor (probably Isaac Taylor III, q.v.), who there calls himself `Successor to Campione'. This would imply that an artist of this name had been working as a painter of silhouettes in

Oxford before 1820, the date of the only dated example of Taylor's work. Campione may have been S. Campione, an 'animal and still life painter' who exhibited two works in these categories at the Royal Academy, and six at the British Institution, from 172 Edgware Road, London, 1831-33. Alternatively, he may have been an older member of the same family.

Since Taylor is known to have worked on glass, we can only guess that Campione did so also, but no silhouette by him has been recorded.
