West, John (McKechnie Section 2)

See Section Seven for main entry

In Section Seven I discuss the probability that this artist is to be identified with John West, a miniature painter and drawing master who worked in Bath.

In an advertisement published, presumably in Derby, in 1811, West offers 'profiles on card, in black 5s'. Since he also offers work in colour, and requires 'two short sittings', it is probable that he painted plain silhouettes in different depths of black, showing some costume detail. No examples are currently available.
