Wybrant, Patrick (McKechnie Section 1)

Known only from a handbill (illustrated) in my collection, advertising a 'Likeness Gallery' managed by Wybrant. The address given is Scarborough, and the handbill was printed in York. The paper on which it is printed suggests a date in the 1840s. The statement 'Observe! — No connection with any other Artist' suggests that Wybrant employed no assistants. We can assume from the prices (mostly low) which are charged that cut work was offered, although no work in plain black is mentioned. Wybrant, however, may well have issued other handbills, on which plain black work is offered. Bronzed bust-and full-length profiles, profiles in colour (of various sizes) and miniatures (from 10s 6d) are offered. At the foot of the handbill Wybrant offers 'Full-length likenesses, Family groups. Sporting Subjects, Dogs, Horses, &c., &c., in which the Expression and Peculiarity of Character are strikingly portrayed.' The word 'expression' suggests that these subjects may have been pencilled in gold.
