London-based AMBROSE CHARLES (ca. 1773-1835) crafted distinctive profiles on paper, glass and Ivory. Well regarded by collectors he was also very well regarded by himself. Relentlessly boastful self-promotion larded with scant regard for truth when advertising ever expanding, dubious, artistic 'credentials' earned him a flurry of contemporary criticism. And almost inevitably his boundless egoism saw him caricatured in a satirical print as 'Mr C, the puffing painter...'.
Charle's 'puffs' were manifold.
