An artist named T. Matthews is recorded by Graves as having sent in a portrait to the Royal Academy (no address is given) in 1811; Foskett states that he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1813.
In the Royal Collection there is a print of George III, dated 1800, by F. Fresci after an original silhouette painted by a T. Matthews who was working at 441 Strand, London. Whether Matthews was the artist recorded by Graves and Foskett cannot be established. The original itself is almost certainly a life-size silhouette head of George III now in private possession, which I have seen. Painted in water-colour on paper, it is so similar in style to that of the illustrated print that no other conclusion seems pos………
