A versatile Irish artist, born in Cork, recorded by Strickland and Foskett. Jackson tells us (Dictionary) that among the drawings bequeathed to the Victoria and Albert Museum by Mr Foster there are two heads painted in black silhouette. Compared with his important historical paintings, portraits both in oil and in water-colour and miniatures, these few silhouette portraits seem to be of little significance.
With regard to the artist's signature, it should be noted that he spelt his surname either Maclise, Mac-Clise, or McLise.
