Introduction:
On a trade label discovered on a painting, Rogers describes himself as “Gaule, Landscape, & Portrait Painter”. Living in Britain until 1818, he was well known as an artist in Plymouth and his work is still exhibited in the City Museum and Art Gallery. Rogers later travelled across Europe and built a good reputation in Austria and Germany. His landscapes were exhibited in British galleries, including the British Exhibition 1808-1851. It has been assumed from the text of advertisements that he produced silhouettes. However, no examples have yet been found.
