Very little is known about J M Rouse. Jackson makes reference to a signed silhouette, dating to the early 1830s. A second silhouette of Miss A L Wilson dated 1833 has been attributed on the basis of its style. Rouse appears to have had a rather unique approach, producing long, almost half-length profiles painted in grey. Gold was used for some details such as hair and an earring whilst gum Arabic was used to show detail in clothing. These characteristics may be used to attribute profiles in the future.
