The information available to us for the silhouette artist J S Mitchell is gathered from his trade labels. The first of these was used in Bath and the second in Bristol, but all describe him as a “Profilist”. It seems that J S Mitchell cut profiles from dark reddish-brown paper which he then highlighted with gold to depict detail. An example of his work is of a man, which shows very fine brushstrokes in the depiction of the hair, with subtle flesh tints on the sitters face. A fine artist, unfortunately little is known of Mitchell’s life or career.
