Many artists by the name of Mansell are recorded by Graves and Foskett, but none working c 1840-1845. The discovery of two silhouettes inscribed ‘Mansell, Marlborough’ from this period establish this Mansell as a separate artist. These pieces have a long and sloping bustline. One has a black water colour base, with touches of colour to highlight clothing. The other silhouette has a plain black background with touches of silver to highlight. Using silver was a rare technique for silhouette artists of the time. Nothing more of this particular Mansell is known.
