Recorded by Foskett as John Tonkin, or Torkin, working in Chapel Street, Penzance, in 1830. Known also from an advertisement in the Royal Cornwall Gazette (5 March 1808), which establishes the correct spelling of his surname:

He will wait on any Lady or Gentlemen on the shortest notice, and take Likenesses, warranted correct, from Two to Three Guineas.
