Introduction:

Known primarily as a portrait painter, Mr W.E. Fox-Smith describes a pair of silhouettes attributed to J Tillotson. One is signed beneath the bust-line ‘Tillotson, 44 Fleet Street’. The other is unsigned, but is clearly by the same artist. The silhouettes are cut from black paper and the detail highlighted in gold paint. The bust-line terminations are a concavity-convexity curve, and are framed in papier-mache. They are not recorded as being exceptional.
