Little is known about the silhouette artist R Thomas. Jackson (The History of Silhouettes) records a profile of an officer by R Thomas which was cut from paper and detailed in Indian ink. This profile was sold unframed, edged with gold paper and mounted on a coloured paper background. Thomas is recorded as having at least one trade label, an example of which is currently held in the National Portrait Gallery. This indicates that he used a patent machine to procure profiles, at a price of 1 shilling each.
