W. Seville painted a few silhouettes on paper (possibly early in his long career), and one example is illustrated. This shows rather coarse brush work, some transparency being achieved on the sitter's cap and ruff by the use of thinned pigment; detail was added in rough hatching. The face shows character, and may have been a good likeness.
