Introduction:

James Lockhart is known through two profiles of men, signed and dated 1814, held in the Grosvenor Museum, Chester. Both are painted in dead black on a rectangular piece of card. There are some signs of skill, including the clear definition of eyelids and eyelashes and delicate portrayal of shirt frills. However, the shape of one sitter's hair, and his high standfall collar, is roughly indicated. Nothing else is known of this artist.
