W. JOLLIFFE - A POSTSCRIPT
The article on Mr. Jolliffe in the April Newsletter prompted a long-standing member of the Silhouette Collectors Club to send me photographs of two of the collection by this artist. I think these are wonderful examples of Jolliffe’s work and I wanted to share the images with you. As these reproductions are from photograph there has inevitably been some loss of detail particularity in regard to frills, feathers and hair. Nevertheless there is much to enjoy.
The gentleman is Dr Lawrence Heynes Halleran — 1764 - 1831. It is recorded that he was possibly Secretary to Lord Natrick and Chaplain on board HMS Britannia at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
The Lady is his wife Mrs Mary Heynes Halleran – nee Mary Bouchier (Pearrce)
The size of the glass oval in each case is 4” by 3.25”. Both are housed in their original pressed brass frames and the glass is backed with cream silk.
It seems that Mr Jolliffe tended to give his male sitters a bust-line termination —whereas his ladies generally went to the bottom of the glass. I think Mrs Halleran is splendid with her long hair and jaunty hat. Also you can see clearly her distinctive arm demarcation lines.
