Introduction:

De Janvry is particularly known for his en grisaille work. He was born in France, but is known to have been working in London by 1793. Unfortunately, there is little more information about De Janvry’s background or career. De Janvry’s en grisaille profiles are pale against a dark grey-black background. He uses a pale reddish-brown base colour, which distinguishes his work from other artists’. Chinese white is used to highlight details. Two different signatures are known, one is a monogram of a J crossing an H, the other is more formal “H.de Janvry 1798”. The National Portrait Gallery displays one of De Janvry’s en grisaille portraits on ivory, which depicts George IV.
