Known from one silhouette of a man, taken apparently in the early 1820s and signed beneath the bust-line in the manner of a professional artist.
The short 'fall' of the high stand-fall collar suggests a date between c. 1812 and c. 1826. The dark cravat suggests the 1820s, as does the width at the shoulder, which indicates the wide sleeve of the time. Stuart has indicated the collar, and the light-coloured waistcoat, merely by leaving these areas white, using slight shading to show the division between the two lapels of the waistcoat. He has indicated the shape of the hair outside the main body of the profile by some brushwork, and has defined the eyelash well. This silhouette (in the T. E. F. Sainsbury collection) was acquired unframed. It is clearly signed J. V. Stuart', in the concavity on the bust-line termination.
