Smith, John (McKechnie Section 5)

See Section Four for main entry

In several entries in the Edinburgh and Leith Post Office Directories Smith is listed as 'Miniature, Profile, Hair and Pearl Worker'. This description offers no more than a possibility that Smith painted small silhouettes on ivory for jewellery setting, no authenticated examples of which are extant. Since, however, he produced hair and pearl work before he started to paint silhouettes, it might be thought that his experience would have encouraged him to paint ivory pieces, and examples might therefore be found.
