An advertisement in the Norwich Mercury (29 December 1781) indicates that Jones's early work was cut. This advertisement has been recorded in an unpublished paper by Trevor Fawcett, Fine Arts Librarian at the University of East Anglia, entitled 'Art in Norwich before the Norwich School'. The reference in the advertisement to Jones reads as follows: 'Mr. Jones, a silhouettist, who cut Likenesses with the Air and Contour of the Head and Bust in the true Stile of the Greek and Roman medallions.'
It would seem that Jones's career followed a course similar to that of Mrs Beetham: he began with cut (perhaps hollow-cut) work, then took to painting on paper, and finally painted on glass as well.
In c. 1779 he appears to have cut profiles from brass foil (see Section Three).
