Recorded by Jackson (Dictionary), who gives the artist's date as the early nineteenth century and states that he is said to have worked in a booth in the Thames Tunnel. She also states that he was ‘doubtless a rival to Mrs Catlin’, for whom, however, she gives the date 1870. The date at which Franklin was working therefore appears problematical; perhaps he flourished c. 1840-50. We have no information about Franklin's work; he was probably a cutter of black profiles.
