Dimmock, John (McKechnie Section 7)

See Section Two for main entry

There is in the Elliott Levy collection a silhouette of a Captain Shaw of Newhall, on which Dimmock has used some colour in rendering the uniform. Some gum arabic has been used to stress shading on the parts of the silhouette where the basic black has been retained. The small shirt-frill protruding beyond the sitter's naval jacket is finely painted. Pale yellow, probably Naples yellow, has been used to show the captain's epaulette and to indicate braid on the rest of his uniform. The bust-line is similar to the bust-lines of the silhouettes described in Section Two, but is finished with only two lines along the curve at the bottom. The silhouette is in a papier mâché frame and is backed with Trade Label No. 1.
