W Dixon is known from two full-length silhouettes apparently taken in the late 1830s or early 1840s. Dixon was a popular contemporary name and a number of artists have been suggested for the identity of this ‘W Dixon’. This includes the miniature painter William Dixon, who entered the Royal Academy Schools 11 December 1789, and the Irish haberdasher and miniature painter William Dixon active in the early 19th century. However, his identity remains unknown. The two silhouettes are embellished with gold on black paper, with backgrounds sketched in pencil. They are signed and framed in maple.
