Franz Deiwel was an Austrian artist and silhouettist who worked primarily in his native country, but also painted in Edinburgh for a time. He was very well known in Austria as the court silhouettist of Francis II. This gave him the opportunity to cut the profiles of Austria’s elite including Councilor von Schraff and the Austrian royal family. His work in Edinburgh is much less celebrated; it is not entirely clear when he was here or indeed if he worked on silhouettes at all. To this date, only paintings from this period have been found. However, given his background some academic believe it very likely that silhouettes were also produced.
