Fergusson, John (McKechnie Section 2)

Recorded by Mr J. A. Pollak (‘Fresh Light on Silhouette’, Connoisseur, March 1949), who mentions a ‘fine obituary silhouette of a child surrounded by an elaborate border'. Another memorial silhouette (illustrated), for a boy, ‘William Angus’, is in the Christie collection. Fergusson, who appears to have worked c. 1810, seems only to have produced silhouettes of this kind.

14 x 8in./356 x 204mm.

The name of the subject is inscribed on the pillar above the oval and on the oval itself. On the base of the pillar, to the left, are the words ‘I am waiting’. Below are the following verses and inscription:
In rapture unsated, in glory
Unclouded
He rests before GOD with the angels
Of light
Till the form in corruption and
Darkness now shrouded
Shall rise at the trump with the soul to unite.
THIS TOKEN OF ESTEEM for the lamented youth whom the profile is designed to represent is respectfully dedicated to Mrs. ANGUS by JOHN FERGUSSON.
