Introduction:

Thomas Douglas Guest is known simply from a silhouette c 1790 recorded by Jackson, signed “T. Guest, Junr. Pinxit”. No existent silhouettes are positively ascribed to him. Many artists with similar names have been suggested as this ‘Guest’, such as the Thomas Douglas Guest who entered the Royal Academy Schools on 23 December 1801, or the 'T. Guest, Junr.' who exhibited at the Royal Academy as a miniaturist in 1801. However, the best attempt at identification can be made from his signature as recorded by Jackson, which bears some resemblance to that of ‘T. Guest, Junr.’ above. Jackson described the silhouette in her collection as finely painted on card, the lighter shades having been obtained with thinned pigment and without the use of body colour.
