Introduction:

Three separate, contemporary silhouette painters known as ‘Gregory’ have been recorded. Jackson’s ‘Dictionary’ lists one active around 1813; Foskett lists one working c 1790 at 74 Newgate, London; and McKechnie describes a miniature in colour, painted c. 1810, bearing the trade label of S. Gregory, London. Some collectors consider these to be a single artist, active in London as a minor miniaturist and painter of silhouettes. Three trade labels are known. Work by Gregory appears to have been of average quality for the time.
