Introduction:

Matthias Christoph Gerhard is recorded as a profilist by Foskett, who refers to a painted profile dated 1795 and signed “Gerhard, miniature and profile painter, 7, Frankfort St: Plymouth”. Foskett suggests that the artist was Matthias Christoph Gerhard active in Strasburg c 1756-92. A ‘Gerhard’ also placed an advertisement for “LIKENESSES in MINIATURE in a superior style of accuracy and elegance”, in the Royal Cornwall Gazette, 22 March 1806. Whether this artist was in fact the Strasbourg ‘Gerhard’ has not been established. None of his work is currently known.
