H Evans is known from an entry in Woodiwiss’ ‘British Silhouettes’. He is described as the artist of a full-length profile of a uniformed male, inscribed “H. Evans, Plymouth, 1826”. Evans does not appear in directories or artist lists for contemporary Plymouth. 215
Woodiwiss notes that the profile was of “unusually small size”, cut either from black paper or white paper rubbed with black, and rather poorly embellished with gold. The sitter’s unusual dress of top hat and slung sword is accounted for, according to Woodiwiss, by the fact that he is a boatswain.
