Introduction:

R? Viner is known from one silhouette of an army officer, Captain Wad Locke, dated 3 December 1830. There is some debate over whether R? Viner is in fact J Viner, a painter who exhibited frequently in London between 1821 and 1854. However, the inscription on this silhouette is not legible enough for a definite decision. The silhouette is painted in black watercolour on card. Touches of white, pink and gold watercolour highlight elements of the sitter’s uniform including buttons, lacing, chinstrap and plume. It is framed in a rectangular giltwood frame typical of the period.
