Ardrossan is known through a silhouette dated 1837 and recorded by Jackson, inscribed ‘Ardrossan’. As this is the name of a town in North Ayrshire, Scotland it has been proposed that the inscription refers to the area worked in, rather than artists’ name. However, this practice was uncommon and most experts believe it to be the name of the painter, perhaps named after his hometown. The one recorded example is painted on card. Detail was added by using a thinned pigment to create depth.
