Miss Ames was a profilist active at least for the year 1784, thought to have worked in Bath. She is known through a trade label held in the British Museum, the wording of which has led some to speculate that she was quite a prolific artist. However, no silhouettes by Miss Ames have currently been identified. Miss Ames is often confused with a Mrs Ames, another profilist active during this period. Some believe that Mrs Ames was in fact her mother but Ames was a common contemporary name, and there is no evidence for this connection. McKechnie believes that, because of the low pricing quoted on Miss Ames’ trade label she must have worked on paper. Aside from this very little is known about Miss Ames’s style.
