Stannard, Joseph (McKechnie Section 6)

Recorded by Foskett, Stannard can probably be identified with an artist who worked for W. Seville (see Seville, W., and Son; Section One) during the 1820s. Seville’s Trade Label No. 5, bearing a profile taken c. 1826-30, includes below Seville’s own name the offer of ‘Miniatures on ivory, and Coloured Likenesses in a variety of Styles by Mr. Stannard’. The range of work offered probably included profile miniatures in colour on card. Foskett, who gives the date of his death as 30 November 1830, mentions that some of his miniatures painted on card (some of them unfinished) are in Yarmouth Museum. I myself know of no profile miniature in colour which is definitely by Stannard; one example of this genre, probably by Seville and described in the entry on him in this Section, may possibly be by Stannard. The only silhouettes backed with the joint trade label of Seville and Stannard which I have seen are obviously Seville’s work.

Graves records thirteen ‘Sea Pieces’ exhibited by Stannard 1820-29, nine at the British Institution (landscapes or marine subjects painted in the Norwich area; listed in The British Institution) and four at Suffolk Street. All these exhibits were sent in from Norwich. Five other members of Stannard’s family, all working in Norwich, exhibited works (none of which were miniatures) at the British Institution.
