Scully, J. C. (McKechnie Section 1)

Recorded by Jackson (Dictionary), who had seen three unframed silhouettes of Daniel O'Connell, MP., Richard Lalor Shiel, MP., and 'John Lawless Esq.' (There is another silhouette of 'Mr Lawless', the 'Irish agitator’). The silhouettes were in a packet, on the outside of which was written, 'All the above were cut for me by a clever English artist, J. C. Scully.'

We can only infer that Scully was an English artist who worked for a time in Ireland, probably c. 1820 (the period when John Lawless was in the news).

Scully was probably a freehand cutter, working in plain black. It is not known whether the examples listed above were in bust- or full-length. No signatures or trade labels are known.
