Introduction:

James Pearse was a notable Portsmouth artist, with the National Portrait Gallery displaying two examples of his work. One is of Lord Nelson, which Jackson records as being cut in 1805 before Nelson sailed for the Battle of Trafalgar. The other is of the Duchess of Kent. Both examples are cut in plain black paper with differing bust-lines, and both are signed “James Pearse, Portsmouth”. Nothing more is known of this apparently successful artist’s life or career.
